Anytime a murmur is heard, an echocardiogram (an ultrasound of the heart) is the best thing to do. A murmur can be caused by many things. In some cases it’s considered an “innocent” murmur, meaning there are no changes in the heart to explain it. In other cases, a murmur can be a symptom of heart disease and is often one of the first things noticed. Heart disease in cats can be difficult to treat, but is managed more easily if caught early. An echocardiogram is one of the best ways to see the heart in motion and determine the heart’s health. This type of ultrasound also gives us more and different information than an x-ray.
