Cats that hiss at unfamiliar people are usually anxious and afraid especially if most of their lives they have had limited exposure to people. In some cases using food rewards to help calm them can be useful. One suggestion is for people who walk by the cat to drop small tidbits of food that the cat really likes and keep on walking and not talk or interact with the cat. Over time this may teach the cat that people approaching her bring good things and her fear and anxiety might diminish. However, in some cases the cat still would rather not be petted or picked up by people she does not know. If the problem escalates, a consultation with a veterinary or an applied animal behaviorist should be scheduled.
