At six years of age, I’m afraid your cat likely is pretty much set in her ways. Certainly she could learn to tolerate—but I fear never like—strangers. And that’s what your granddaughter and daughter would be for her. Anyone that does not live with a cat on an ongoing basis constitutes a stranger, and as such, would be considered a potential danger to the cat.
Is it any wonder a frightened cat would keep her distance from strangers, or even hiss and growl, and seek to chase them away? We often must put ourselves in our cat’s paw-steps to better understand what’s going on.
I’d suggest that you designate one particular room that becomes the cat’s safe place when you have guests. Keep food, water, toys, a cat tree, litter box and other kitty must-haves in this room. Then before your daughter and grandchildren arrive, shut the cat inside the room. She’ll feel safer and less upset if she knows that she won’t be bothered. And your friends and family will be more willing to visit.
