You’re doing the right thing trying to figure this out ahead of time. The best way to convince your future landlord is to offer references from the current one attesting to what a terrific tenant you’ve been, and that your cat has caused no problems. Get another letter of reference from your veterinarian that shows you’re a wonderful pet parent and have taken great care of your cat—and will continue to do so. Ask your spiritual leader of your church/synagogue/mosque to also provide a letter of reference. Your medical doctor also could offer you a letter that stipulates that keeping your cat helps you with your health problems, if that’s the case. Pets DO have a very positive impact on human health by lowering blood pressure, reducing stress, and increasing our connections to other people. Some special animals can be certified as therapy or assistance pets. Finally, offer to pay a pet deposit and/or increase your insurance to cover any potential damage—you know you’ll get the deposit back when your cat remains the sainted pet he’s always been.
