In some cases excessive licking is a redirected behavior when there is stress or frustration. Animals can become frustrated when there is not enough stimulation in their environment. Daily play session, rotation of toys, hiding food bowls and food dispensing toys all help make the environment more interesting. If the licking continues, the cat may have a compulsive disorder and may need a referral to a veterinary behaviorist.
