The first step in treatment of any aggression problem is avoidance of the known triggers for the aggression. If a pet is aggressive toward visitors in the home, they must be confined in a secure location before any visitors enter. In some cases this takes training so that the animal learns to associate the area with pleasant encounters. This can simply be confining the cat when no one is visiting, staying in the room with them and offering treats and quiet time. Vary the amount of time the pet must stay and be calm before they are let out. Once they are comfortable with you in the room, you can start leaving them for short times by themselves. Always reward with a food treat, a new toy or a fun game to help keep the pet happily occupied. Then, prior to company arriving the pet can be secured in this safe location away from people. Treatment for aggression requires a good behavioral history and diagnosis to determine what other treatments might be useful and if medication might help. A veterinary behaviorist should be able to help guide you through this process.
