There can be several reasons a cat may choose to stand up to eliminate. A medical problem should be explored to rule out bladder or bowel issues. If the cat is elderly, arthritis should be investigated as well. Although a litter box is scooped daily, if the plastic box is old it still may retain odor and be objectionable to the cat especially if it is only emptied and cleaned monthly. Finally, if the boxes are all in the same location and there are social tensions between the cats, this could cause a change in litter box use. It is often suggested that in a multiple cat home that the boxes be placed in multiple locations to help ensure access and privacy for each cat.
