All animals will cycle through a light sleep phase and a heavy sleep phase during which they may dream. The growling and twitching is usually part of the dreaming sequence and in most cases is normal behavior. If the pet is difficult to arouse, or wakes up and is still aggressive, other problems could be present and a veterinary examination would be recommended.
