Many cats hate change. Your seven-year-old feline likes his comfortable routine. Anything different, to a cat’s way of thinking, could potentially be dangerous. His reaction actually isn’t at all unusual, but of course it is distressing for you and for him. Follow your veterinarian’s advice regarding the sedation. I will caution you that some kitties will react to some sedatives with the opposite behavior–that is, instead of calming; some medications make nervous cats even more upset and active. If you can manage the trip without medication, that’s usually the best option. You might try the product Feliway sprayed on a towel and left inside the carrier. That helps signal the cat there’s nothing to fear.
