A small kitten needs a litter box appropriately sized just for them. Since they are often tiny, a litter box with lower sides might be necessary for the first few months. After that, alternative boxes can be slowly phased into the routine. Self cleaning litter boxes do remove the waste material on a regular basis, but they still must be emptied, washed and refilled every few weeks. As for teaching a cat to use a human toilet, they first must be able to jump up there easily and that might be a bit difficult for a young kitten. Overall, cleanliness, placement and appropriate size of the box are important points to remember.
