Each kitten and cat is an individual and will vary in their desire for handling, cuddling and interaction. Forcing them to remain nearby when they want to leave often results in avoidance or an increase in attempts to get away. Sitting quietly on the floor, allowing the kitten to approach you and then rewarding with petting, food, or play will help the kitten feel more comfortable with human interaction. Over time the kitten may be more willing to interact, be picked up and held. Respecting their boundaries and slowly teaching them to accept more handling is the best way to encourage ongoing interactions.
